After Epic 8-Year Battle, California Uber, Lyft Drivers May Soon Receive Employee Benefits
KQED – San Francisco
California’s Uber and Lyft drivers, long considered independent contractors, could be reclassified as employees this week, allowing them to receive basic workplace protections like unemployment insurance and a guaranteed minimum wage. The ride-hailing companies have until Thursday to appeal a state judge’s order issued last week in response to a lawsuit brought by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra. In that order, San Francisco Superior Court Judge Ethan Schulman noted the companies “prolonged and brazen refusal to comply with California law,” adding that they “may not evade legislative mandates merely because their businesses are so large that they affect the lives of many thousands of people.”
