Healey sues Uber, Lyft; companies vow to fight

Boston Herald

Attorney General Maura Healey is suing Uber and Lyft, asking the courts to declare that drivers are employees of the transportation tech giants, rather than independent contractors — a suit the companies are vowing to fight. “Uber and Lyft have gotten a free ride for far too long,” Healey insisted in a virtual news conference on Tuesday, announcing the suit in Suffolk Superior Court. “These drivers are employees under Massachusetts law.” The AG said she’s seeking a court order ruling that the drivers for the ride-sharing companies are employees, rather than contractors, and deeming that the drivers have the rights that normal employees have, like minimum wage, overtime pay, sick leave and benefits.
